About the itinerary

The Madrid Up & Down Bebike Tour leaves from the Plaza de España, located in the Argüelles neighborhood, and starts with a visit to a viewpoint in the Parque del Oeste, where you will visit the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian temple built in 200 BC, that was dismantled and rebuilt in the middle of Madrid in the 1970s.

Cycling through the park near the Manzanares River, you will arrive at the Mirador del Príncipe Pío to continue to ride down to the river and the Puerta de San Vicente, a replica of the original city wall’s old gate. At the next stop, Campo del Moro (the former royal gardens) you will be rewarded with amazing views of the Royal Palace and the Cathedral in the background.

The route continues along the course of the Manzanares River until reaching the peculiar Ermita de la Virgen del Puerto, whose Virgin is the destination of Madrid’s pilgrimages, built in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1945 after being destroyed during the Civil War.

On the way up to the Royal Palace, you will drive on the Cuesta de la Vega, which follows the layout of the old Arab wall, and crosses the Parque de Atenas until reaching the Catedral de Almudena. The cathedral, whose construction started at the end of the nineteenth century and took over 100 years, is one of Madrid’s most emblematic buildings as the Virgen de la Almudena is the patron saint of Madrid.

Even more content

The next section of the Madrid Up & Down Bebike Tour takes us to the Jardin de las Vistillas, a park that owes its name to the hill on which it is located, and continues to the Real Basilica San Francisco el Grande, an essential stop because its dome has the third largest diameter of all Christian churches, exceeded only by the Pantheon and the Vatican. After visiting this fantastic church, you will enter the Barrio de La Latina, arriving at Plaza de los Carros, where freight cars and travelers had to wait to access to the city through the Puerta de Moros long ago.

In La Latina, you will drive along the Costanilla de San Andrés, with its numerous restaurants, and terraces, until you arrive at Casa Ciriaco, a famous tavern where traditional Madrilenian dishes are being served for more than a century. In 1906, in the same building, the radical anarchist Mateu Morral used a self-made explosive to make an assassination attempt on King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia on the day of their marriage, killing 25 people but leaving the monarchs unharmed.

The tour continues to the Plaza Mayor, an emblematic point of social and cultural life in Madrid, as well as to Plaza de Jacinto Benavente, where one of the oldest theaters in the capital, the Sala Ideal, was located. You will continue through the alleys of Madrid de Los Austrias, admiring the façade of the Basílica de San Miguel, one of Spanish Baroque architectural jewels, until reaching the Madrid’s historic center: the Plaza de la Villa.

The Plaza de la Villa accommodates palaces of great historical and cultural interest: the Torre de Los Lujanes, built in the 15th century, where one of the oldest deck of Spanish playing cards was found and, in front of it, the Casa de la Villa, which has been the seat of the Madrilenian city council from the 17th century to 2008.

Back on the main street you will reach the Plaza de Oriente, next to the Royal Palace, the official residence of the King of Spain and the largest palace in Western Europe. Here, it is common to encounter musicians such as lyrical singers or harp players, because, the square accommodates the theater of Madrid’s opera house, the Teatro Real, inaugurated in 1850.
