About the itinerary

The Madrid Art eBike Tour begins at the Monumento a Cervantes on Plaza de España. From there, you will pedal to the Royal Palace, the residence of the monarchy that was protector and patron of many universal artists. You will ride through the alleys and squares of Madrid de los Austrias to the neighboring Barrio de las Letras, home to numerous great Spanish writers. Afterward, you will continue to explore the popular district of Lavapiés and the Paseo del Arte, the area where several of Spain’s most famous museums are located.

The second part of the Madrid Art eBike Tour will lead you to the Retiro Park and the area known as „Paseo del Arte“, the boulevard which owes its name to the fact that it accommodates three of Spain’s primary art museums: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Reina Sofía Art Museum.

After passing by the CaixaForum, you will continue towards the Cuesta de Moyano, beautiful home of many picturesque bookshops, from where you will enter the Jardines del Buen Retiro and visit its beautiful Palacio de Cristal del Retiro.

Even more content

The park Jardines del Buen Retiro once was the royal family’s resting place and now has become the great central public park of Madrid. The itinerary through the park will take you the Monumento al Ángel Caído (Monument to the Fallen Angel), one of few statues in the world dedicated to the devil. You will pedal around the park’s magnificent pond and visit the Palacio de Cristal and the Palacio de Velázquez, both exhibition spaces attached to the Prado Museum.

Upon leaving the Retiro Park you will drive towards the Prado Museum, the largest art gallery in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, with an extensive collection of Spanish, Italian and Flemish art. The area around the museum, known as Prado Campus, comprises buildings that complement the spaces of the actual Prado: the Cubo de Moneo, el Edificio Aldeasa, el Salón de Reinos o el Casón del Buen Retiro.

You will cross the Paseo del Prado and the Plaza de Neptuno to arrive at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, which has an eclectic collection of 800 pieces of art, from Gothic to Pop-art paintings, which were acquired by the Spanish state in 1993. The route continues on Calle Alcalá to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, an institution created in the Age of Enlightenment to promote Spanish art.

The next destination is one of the most alternative areas of Madrid, the Malasaña district, that owes its name to a local heroine of the uprising against the French occupation on the 2nd of May 1808. In this neighborhood, the best of Madrid’s traditions are combining with modernity, causing many of the latest trends in Spanish design to emerge. In its streets, you will find hipster bars, comic book shops, and concert halls. La Malasaña neighborhood became famous in the 80’s because it was here where la Movida madrileña was born, a countercultural movement of music, plastic art, and much provocation.

From Malasaña, you will return to the Gran Vía, the big boulevard in the center of the city, with its lively atmosphere and its crowded sidewalks. The avenue connects the Paseo del Prado with Plaza de España and, in its last section, with Moncloa. Cycling through small side streets, such as the well-known Calle del Pez, full of bars and entertainment venues, you will visit the famous Teatro Victoria, founded in 1905, which has hosted plays, musicals and all kinds of theatrical performances, before finishing your tour back at Plaza de España.
